Menus

Your chapter website’s navigation menu controls which links appear in the main menu bar at the top of your site. This article covers how to add, edit, reorder, and remove menu links.

Accessing the Menu Editor

  1. Log in to your chapter’s WordPress dashboard.
  2. Go to Appearance > Menus.
  3. If your site has more than one menu, use the Select a menu to edit dropdown near the top to choose the correct one (most chapters have a single Primary Menu).

Tip: If you’re not sure which menu controls your site’s main navigation, check the Manage Locations tab on the same screen — it shows which menu is assigned to which display location.

Adding a Menu Link

  1. On the Appearance > Menus screen, look at the boxes on the left side (Pages, Posts, Custom Links, Categories, etc.).
  2. Choose the type of link you want to add:
    • Pages — check the box next to any existing page on your site.
    • Custom Links — enter any URL (internal or external) and the text you want displayed, useful for linking to outside sites or specific anchors.
    • Posts/News, Jobs, Downloads, etc. — available if you want to link directly to a specific item rather than a general page.
  3. Click Add to Menu. The item will appear at the bottom of the menu structure on the right.
  4. Drag the new item into the position you want it to appear in the menu.
  5. Click Save Menu in the bottom-right corner.

Note: New items are added to the end of the menu by default. Don’t forget to drag them into place and save — nothing is finalized until you click Save Menu.

Editing a Menu Link

  1. On the Appearance > Menus screen, find the link you want to change in the menu structure on the right.
  2. Click the small arrow (▼) on the right side of that menu item to expand its settings.
  3. Update any of the following:
    • Navigation Label — the text shown in the menu (this can be different from the page title).
    • URL — for Custom Links only; edit the destination address.
    • Title Attribute — optional tooltip text shown on hover.
    • Open link in a new tab — check this box if the link should open in a new browser tab (recommended for external links).
  4. Click Save Menu.

Reordering Menu Items

  • Drag and drop items up or down to change their order.
  • Drag an item slightly to the right and drop it just below another item to make it a sub-menu (dropdown) item nested under that parent link.
  • Click Save Menu after any reordering.

Removing a Menu Link

  1. On the Appearance > Menus screen, find the link you want to remove.
  2. Click the arrow (▼) to expand that menu item.
  3. Click Remove.
  4. Click Save Menu.

Tip: Removing a link from the menu does not delete the underlying page, post, or item — it only removes it from the navigation. To fully delete a page, see Delete a Page.

Troubleshooting

  • My changes aren’t showing on the live site. Try clearing your browser cache — see Clearing Your Browser Cache.
  • I don’t see an Appearance > Menus option. Your user role may not have access to this area. Contact your chapter administrator or submit a support ticket.
