How to Show Different Questions for Different Ticket Types Using Conditional Logic

Sometimes you need to ask different registration questions depending on which ticket someone buys — sponsors need different info than attendees, virtual attendees don’t need parking instructions, and only people with a meal ticket need to answer a dietary question. Event Espresso’s Advanced Registration Forms add-on makes this possible using Conditional Logic, which shows or hides a question based on the ticket(s) a person selects during registration. This is now installed on your Chapter’s website.

This article walks through three common setups:

  • Attendee tickets vs. Sponsor tickets
  • In-Person tickets vs. Virtual tickets
  • Tickets that include a meal vs. tickets that don’t

Before You Start

Note: Conditional Logic requires the Advanced Registration Forms add-on to be active on the site. If you don’t see a “Conditional Logic” toggle when editing a question, check Event Espresso > Add-ons first, or submit a ticket (link at the bottom of this article) and we’ll confirm it’s enabled.

You’ll also want your tickets already created for the event (Event Espresso > Events > [your event] > Tickets & Datetimes) before you start building conditional questions, since you’ll be selecting those ticket names in the logic rules.

Step 1: Create the Question(s) You Only Want Some Registrants to See

  1. Go to Event Espresso > Registration Forms > Questions.
  2. Click Add New Question.
  3. Fill in the question text and choose the question type (text, dropdown, checkbox, etc.).
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the question editor and find the Conditional Logic toggle. Turn it on.
  5. In the conditional logic settings, set the rule so the question only appears when a specific ticket is selected during registration (rather than basing it on an answer to a prior question).
  6. Save and close the question.

Tip: Give these questions clear internal names, like “Sponsor – Company Logo Upload” or “In-Person – Parking Needed,” so they’re easy to find later in the Questions list.

Step 2: Add the Question to a Question Group

Conditional questions still need to belong to a question group, or they won’t show up at all.

  1. Go to Event Espresso > Registration Forms > Question Groups.
  2. Either create a new group (e.g., “Sponsor Info”) or open an existing one.
  3. Check the box next to your new conditional question(s) to link them to the group.
  4. Save and close.

Step 3: Assign the Question Group to Your Event

  1. Go to Event Espresso > Events and open your event.
  2. In the Event Registration Options section, check the box for your new question group under Questions for Primary Registrant (and Additional Registrants, if you want it to apply to guests added to the same order).
  3. Save the event.

Important: If the question group isn’t assigned to the event, the conditional question will never display — even if the conditional logic rule itself is set up correctly.

Scenario Examples

1. Attendee vs. Sponsor Tickets

  • Create a question like “Company Name for Sponsor Signage” or “Upload Sponsor Logo.”
  • Set the conditional logic to trigger only when the Sponsor ticket is selected.
  • Regular Attendee tickets will never see this question.

2. In-Person vs. Virtual Tickets

  • Create two separate conditional questions:
    • “Do you need a parking pass?” → triggered by the In-Person ticket
    • “Which device will you use to join the virtual session?” → triggered by the Virtual ticket
  • Each question only appears for the matching ticket type, so in-person attendees aren’t asked about devices and virtual attendees aren’t asked about parking.

3. Tickets With Food vs. Without Food

  • Create a question like “Dietary Restrictions or Allergies.”
  • Set the conditional logic to trigger only for ticket types that include a meal (e.g., “Full Conference Pass,” “VIP Dinner Ticket”).
  • Attendees who purchase a ticket without food (e.g., a “Virtual” or “Exhibit Hall Only” ticket) won’t be asked this question.

Testing Your Setup

Always test before the event goes live:

  1. Visit the event’s registration page as if you were a normal attendee.
  2. Select each ticket type one at a time (or in combination, if multiple tickets can be purchased together) and step through checkout.
  3. Confirm that only the expected questions appear for each ticket.

If a conditional question isn’t showing up as expected, check the following, in order:

  1. Is the conditional question assigned to a question group?
  2. Is that question group assigned to the event (Step 3 above)?
  3. Is the conditional logic rule pointing at the correct ticket name?
  4. Try clearing your browser cache or testing in an incognito window, in case a cached version of the registration page is loading.

Note: If you’re using conditional questions alongside answer-based logic (e.g., “only ask this if they answered Yes to another question”), and you later edit the answer options on that earlier question, you’ll need to re-select the updated answer in the conditional rule so the logic keeps working correctly.

A Known Quirk to Watch For

Conditional questions — even ones a registrant never actually saw or answered — can sometimes still show up in confirmation emails. This is a known limitation. If it happens, the workaround is to remove that question/field from the confirmation email template rather than relying on it to hide itself automatically.
